Emerging markets came on to my radar when studying Ray Dalio’s portfolio at Bridgewater Associates. You will see in this video that they have allocated over 10% of the portfolio to the emerging markets. The 3 funds are Vanguard VWO, iShares EEM & IEMG. I will also include analysis on the Vanguard VFEM which is a good UK alternative.

Yeah nice video, thanks. S&P500 is only the top 500 (about 504) in the US. Not to be confused with S&P total market cap which you may have been thinking about when you said total market index.

I'm new to investing. I'm looking for several ETFs that would diversify my portfolio and protect against inflation with all the billions being spent.

Can you recommend several good ETFs for US investors?
I've looked at vti, spy, vnq.

Nice video! Just a minor disagreement of politics: Taiwan is not a province of People Republic of China (PRC), at least not yet. Taiwan itself is Republic of China (ROC)

    Hi Nathan,
I find it interesting that through Ray’s advice on currency and sector diversification, I don’t see much developed market holdings on his side, see VEA, EFA & IEFA % of holdings. Also I haven’t found any directly held international developed stocks in his top 50 holdings.
Do you have some info on why that is?

    Thanks for the great content,

"Taiwan is a province of China" ??!! Looks like someone is working for the Chinese Communist Party. Might want to not repeat propaganda lines of a dictatorships if you want to be taken seriously… I guess you are also cool with the concentration camps in Xinjiang.

Nathan, what do you think about John Bogle’s point of why he only invested in the US? He said that since most of the top US companies trade internationally and have international interests, investing in S&P 500 is effectively investing in the whole world; but cheaper and less risk.

Love your video! I hope Taiwan can reunite with China someday (they were both called China in the past), but right now it’s not a province or a independent country yet.

Another great video. I am not sure exactly how to calculate the actual numerical difference, but if say Vanguard Total Stock Market Index Fund Investor Shares (VTSMX) will perform in a similar way as the Emerging market ETF, then the difference in fees between 0.1 and 0.22 percent will be significant. Am I right in thinking that to benefit from the Emerging markets ETF, they will have to outperform the Total stocks or the S&P 500 by a factor of at least 2?

Hey, have you ever done wider research into Chinese companies? I was wondering if you've factored in that a majority of these etf's are built up of companies based in mainland china, where any company above 50 employees is controlled by the government who have a long history of corruption, human rights violations and acting without shareholders interest in mind. With this, the threat of delisting from American exchanges, their housing market bubble and the incredible difficulty transferring foreign investments home to the US and UK, what 'up-sides' do you see that outweigh all this?

I prefer IEMG due to it tracking the MSCI index which includes South Korea.
