Norms, practices, functions, events, or structures in society change over time. Use of language within culture to describe either those things, the changes they went through, or both, may shift similarly. When this happens, you can wind up with metaphoric descriptions of things that would have made more literal sense in the past or in a different context that doesn't occur as much or at all anymore, and thus may not make as much straightforward, intuitive, or literal sense. I believe this is how idioms form.

Additionally, considering all of this, I think of idioms as the linguistic equivalent of seeing starlight in the night sky from stars that could have very well burned out and turned into a nebula, dwarf, neutron star, or black hole long ago, but were far enough away that their light is still catching up. They are echoes of past things and conceptual connections drawn between them that no longer make as much sense as they would have in the time and context of their original usage. They therefore serve as a glimpse into the past and how much the changes related to those aspects of society and culture apparently have changed that past context and the meaning that was used to convey something about it.

I never understood the fraze "It's raining cats & dogs outside" cause where I live, if it's raining real hard, we always say, "It's raining pots & pans outside" so I always found it odd when someone would be like " Oh man it's raining cats & dogs out there!" Like bro what? 🤔

I swear some of these dont make any sense at all, sometimes it makes me wonder if im autistic or something lol

For example having his heart on his sleeve… wtf was that supposed to mean? Apparently it means that ur expressive of ur emotions, but it would make much more sense to say having his heart on his tongue or something like that but why the fuck would they pick a fucking sleeve lmao

Raining cats and dogs came from 1651 when cats and dogs slept on roofs and whenever it rained or got slippery they would fall off.
