Many guitar players have no idea how to know once they’ve successfully completed the “beginner” stage of playing guitar. When do you officially become an intermediate guitar player? In this guitar lesson, Nate Savage will answer that but going through a list of things you need to do successfully to call yourself a certified intermediate guitarist.

To be considered an intermediate player, you’ll need to be able to do the following:
– Know and be able to change smoothly between your fundamental open chords.
– Know power chords and be able to move them around cleanly.
– Know the basic Major and Minor bar chord shapes.
– Know the note names on the Low E and A strings.
– You’ll need to have all the basic strumming patterns down.
– Be able to play along to a metronome.
– Hear and match Major and Minor chords.
– Hear and identify the keys of simple songs.
– Understand music theory for keys and chords. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DxSKfnk0D18
– Play through several complete songs.
– Play the Blues scale.
– Play the Major scale.
– Play the Major Pentatonic Scale.
– Play the Minor Pentatonic Scale.
– You’ll need to know basic lead technique: Picking, Bending, Sliding, & Vibrato.
– Depending on your goals you may need to be able to read music.

Obviously, there are a lot of things here you need to get down before you can call yourself a true intermediate guitar player. Treat this lesson like your checklist. Go through each bullet point and check them off as you go. By the time you’re done, you’ll be a well-rounded intermediate guitarist!

The one sure-fire way to identify an intermediate guitar player is repeatedly playing "Stairway to Heaven" while "trying 'em out" at Guitar Center.

    – Beginners don't know how to play it.

    – Intermediate's know how (sorta), but don't know that they shouldn't.

And it's like garlic to vampires. It keeps everyone away from that area of the store.

Okay so I can confidently say I’m an intermediate player. Which is awesome because I’m completely self taught since I was 14. I’m still working on some scales but I have the pentatonic and blues down.

Screw spending most of your time learning to play other people’s/bands music. Create your own. I mean don’t get me wrong I know certain artists music but don’t get too caught up learning others then call yourself a guitar player. Learn the basics and then spend time trying to create your own music. Then after a couple years you can see what you’ve created

    Thanks – I think I qualify…
Been playing since '62 – in occasional groups with friends but never in the semi-pro or even regular-pub category.
I think of myself as an entertainer more than as a guitarist so happy playing on my own with (say) a '60s set.
Garageband has been a God-send in lockdown as I've managed to multitrack a lot.
Maybe I am getting better at 74 😎
Basically, I enjoy it so that's a good start I think.

    Two critical skills to add:
    1) tuning the guitar by ear using either lower adjacent string fretted notes (5th or 4th fret) or adjacent string harmonics: too many people rely on electronic tuners. This also helps attain an instinctive understanding the intervals between the strings which will be beneficial during later learning.
    2) transforming any of the chords mentioned in this video into dominant 7 or minor 7 chords.

Many of these are really more about classical/jazz guitar on a acoustic guitar. I feel like rock/metal stuff is way more about technique, and less about the theory behind it. Obviously not completely leaving it out, but much less
