The Dangers of Debt Settlement Programs and Debt Consolidation – Minnesota Bankruptcy Lawyer –
A rant by Minnesota bankruptcy lawyer Dave Kelly 952-544-6356 about crooked and misleading advertising of programs which claim they can eliminate your debt. Some of the ads try to imply that Obama has a new program that they can sign you up for to eliminate your debt. OR they claim that “you have a right to settle your debt …” Well, everybody has always had a right to settle their debt – if the creditor will agree to a settlement – which is always the problem of course.
You should avoid any agency that is not in the state where you live. Also avoid any agency that has not been approved by the Justice Department for bankruptcy counseling. It would be best is you go with an agency that has been around since before the current recession. Many of them had sprung up to take advantage of vulnerable people in the current difficult times.
The only two debt counseling agencies recommended by Dave Kelly are Lutheran Social Services and Family Means.
