Does BGE Collections lower your credit score? BGE Collections is a debt collection agency.
If you have defaulted on electricity payments from the Baltimore Gas and Electric Company, the debt collection agency can contact you.
In addition to contacting you, the company will add a collections account to your credit report that could keep your score dropping for years.
In order to stop the calls and letters from BGE you may be inclined to take the call and pay them the amount due, but this does not help your balance.
Read on for our guide on how to get UBI collections out of your life and out of your credit report.
About UBI collections
The Baltimore Gas and Electric Company is one of the largest utility companies in Maryland. In other words, BEG is legitimate, as is its collection arm.
If you cancel the service with an outstanding balance or default on your electricity payments, your provider will make several attempts to collect payments from you.
If they are unsuccessful, your debt will be recovered, which can have a significant impact on your credit report.
Some companies sell their debts to third party debtors, while others like BGE have their own collection agency.
Collection entries are added to your credit report and remain there for 7 years even after you pay off the debt.
Because of this, it is important to follow these steps and make sure that the entry is deleted from your report.
How to contact UBI collections
Collection agencies are often the subject of consumer complaints that focus on their communications, debt non-validation and incorrect reporting.
Take a look at the Better Business Bureau and Consumer Financial Protection Bureau to get an idea of what customers have been doing with BGE Collections.
You should also read up on the basics of the Fair Collections Practices Act before contacting BGE Collections.
It stops the collection agencies from contacting you late at night and early in the morning, prohibits them from threatening or harassing you, and asks them to validate their debts.
If you contact BGE, you should let them know that you are aware of your rights provided by the FDCPA.
One of those rights is the ability to choose how collection agencies contact you.
We recommend limiting your interactions with them to just letters. Not only does this stop BGE’s repetitive phone calls, but it also helps you document your case.

3 Ways To Remove UBI Collections From Your Credit Report
If you don’t intervene, BGE Collections will continue to affect your creditworthiness.
One of the following strategies can help you remove the debt collection record from your credit report.
Send out a Debt Validation Letter
Accidents happen. Sometimes reporting errors are responsible for inaccurate collection entries. In other cases, you could be attacked by an identity thief.
Either way, if you think there is an error in your report, you should request validation.
All you have to do is send BGE a debt review letter, which you can quickly create using this free template.
However, the debt check is not just for inaccurate input. Even if you owe UBI, you may be able to remove it from your report using this method.
If the company does not have the necessary documentation to validate your debt, it will have to remove it from your report.
The FDCPA gives you 30 days to dispute a collection entry. So you should act quickly here.
Propose a pay-for-delete agreement
If you can’t remove BGE from your report for free using the strategy above, your best bet is to propose a pay-for-delete agreement as it sounds.
Unless you give BGE permission to have the collection entry removed from your report, it will remain there for the entire 7 years, even if you pay off your debts.
With this approach, you offer to pay UBI so that the entry is deleted from your report.
The best part? You can often get collection agencies to agree to a negotiated payment to settle your debt.
Owe 250 BGE? Offer to pay $ 125 in exchange for a deletion and work from there.
As always, we encourage you to negotiate with the company in writing. This is the best way to make sure your agreement is being followed.
As soon as you and BGE have agreed an amount and submit your payment, this should be included in your report quickly.
If after 30 days you’re still waiting for your report to be updated, contact the company to remind them of your agreement and payment.
Hire a credit repair company
While getting a debt collection agency out of your report is doable, it can be stressful.
If you want to play a less practical role in this, consider hiring a credit repair company.
They will make sure the collection agencies are complying with the FDCPA and will help you remove the entry from your report as soon as possible.
They can be of great benefit when faced with other challenging credit problems such as:
- Real estate liens
- Hard requests
- Identity theft
There are a handful of excellent credit repair firms to choose from. Take a look at the list and choose the one that best suits your needs.
