At the moment, Capital One offers 22 different credit card options including popular ones like the platinum MasterCard, venture card, Quicksilver, Savor, journey student card, secure MasterCard, the spark business card, and several other retail-specific cards as well. Now that’s great and all but there’s a lot of companies that offer a ton of credit card options so what’s the big deal here. Well, what specifically caught my eye that I wasn’t aware of is that Capital One actually offers the same exact credit card multiple times depending on your credit level and what rewards you’re looking to get. For example, the Quicksilver card which is a very popular option has the regular Quicksilver rewards, Quicksilver rewards with good credit, and the Quicksilver one rewards card.
And the same thing goes with the savor card and several other credit card options. So let’s talk about the differences between all of these so that you can make the best decision possible. First I want to start with the Quicksilver and savor cards because those are two of the most popular options and then we’ll take a look at some of those more niche products. So the standard Quicksilver card is a very popular free option that offers you unlimited 1.5% cash back on all of your purchases across the board. Now a lot of people argue that this loses out to the Citi double cash card which offers you 2% back across the board and in terms of cash back that is absolutely true however the Quicksilver rewards card gives you a $200 signup bonus when you spend $500 in the first three months which is something that the double cash card does not have.
But Capital One also offers a Quicksilver rewards card if your credit isn’t quite as good and it’s exactly the same in terms of cash back but just removes the eligibility for that signup bonus. Now Capital One doesn’t specifically say what credit score they consider good or excellent but they do give these helpful guidelines that should give you an idea of which category you fall into. But even beyond those two Quicksilver options, there’s also the Quicksilver one rewards card which has a $39 annual fee, offers the same 1.5% cash back, but is available to individuals that have what they call fair credit. And again maybe it’s just me, but I thought this was a really interesting concept that I personally have not seen anywhere else because typically when I review certain credit card options, there might be a credit score requirement or something like that in order to qualify for certain cards.
And for the most part you either meet the requirement or not and that determines whether or not you can get that particular credit card. But what Capital One is saying is instead of denying you completely we’re just going to offer a few different options with slightly different benefits in case you’re still interested in getting this product. So instead of applying for the Quicksilver rewards card and getting denied because your credit score isn’t good enough, well maybe you could still qualify for the Quicksilver rewards good credit or the Quicksilver one rewards card and still earn that 1.5% cash back.
