Why would you focus on paying the debt with the LOWEST interest rate?

I’m mid 40s and owe so much student debt, it doesn’t make any sense to attempt to pay it off. I’ll just pay the min either until death (income driven is capped at 10% of AGI) and allocate as much as poss to retirement. That’s the rational move!

Dave should talk about THIS. Student loan debt is a very unique debt, he treats it like it’s all the other debt.

The or, to the either, is that I work for govt. I understand why ppl are being rejected. Dave does not.

Truly, I wished to have started paying off in 2020, but because of pandemic, everything became a mess. Will take time, but hope my loans are paid off within a few years from now.

Bad mathematically. You should work out how much interest you are saving now that the student loan is at 0% and add this on as an extra payment the cc.

Wrong they will bail it out. What are they going to do? Garnish wages for 5 million people? Nope. We have the leverage. Don’t pay student loans at all!

First pay off any debt that is accruing interest first. CC have the highest interest rate so it would be smart to take care of this debt. Secondly 0% interest is great it offers you two options one you can invest this money and earn interest or save the money as an emergency reserve during this time of uncertainty. You can always take this money and put it towards loans the moment interest is about to return and you still benefit from the interest free period.

Math does not work like that, interest rate does matter…

I spoke with the student loan centre 3 times, and every time they said no interest will be accumulated over the 4 month period. I said are you sure they said yes. Well….not I currently have 4 months of interest accumulated!!!! On my account! They lied to me …

My mortgage company offered a forbearance that you could pay at the end of your loan but that means you can never refinance! So I said, no way and going through a refinance now at 2.25% FHA. Better than my original loan/2nd refi and my next goal is to get my credit score to 780 to convert to conventional at 2.75%. Kicking the PMI out, the 2.75% will still be less than the 2.25% FHA with PMI! Goals. Have them!

I was furloughed since the beginning of the pandemic and used that time to save up money for an EF, started a Roth IRA, saved up for several sinking funds goals, and still paid off 4/8 of my loans. Went back to work for 3 weeks and am back to being furloughed because our numbers skyrocketed. Just going to take the next little while day by day and see how I do

  18. Will Elliott
    July 26, 2021 at 9:57 am

And when the lender tells you that the forbearance will not affect your credit report, they are LYING. I might not affect your score, but it will be noted on your report, which is a roadblock to refinancing your home.

My student Loans ended up being smaller than my CC's or car or home… so… I got lucky and they fell in line in BS2 and now paying those off as quickly as possible.

Why would you focus on the 0% interest loan? You'll pay off all your debt faster if you focus on the other loans to stop them from accruing interest

My student loans didn't qualify, I guess when I had them consolidated, they are not considered federal student loans? I didn't realize that, but my interest was lowered 1.5% on 80k.

I wish I could pay off my student loan quickly. It’s going to be a long time though. I’m trying the best I can to hurry up and pay off my other debts before tackling that. It’s about $50k. Just consolidated to a federal loan so that would hopefully help. I’ll be 50 this year and I’m sure I’ll never be able to pay it off before I die. At least I can say I tried. On baby step 2 and I know I’ll never get to #3. I don’t have any desire to be super wealthy. It’s only me. I have no kids so I don’t worry about dying rich. You can’t take it worth you anyway. To each their own I suppose.

I thank God for FPU. My wife isn't working and we're paying all our bills with my income. If we had a car payment, credit cards, mortgage and personal loans, I don't know what we'd do to pay our bills.

It's crazy how things work. I've been hammering my debt down, student loans included, and now that I'm two months away…0% interest hits haha. Could have used that earlier. Oh well…debt will be gone soon enough and I'll be ready to generate some real wealth. I'M READY!!
