Doterra Stock Market – Co-Impact Sourcing: The Pursuit – Clove (Translated Subtitles)
Doterra Stock Market – Highest Rated?
Tropical and humid, the eastern coast of Madagascar has the perfect conditions for clove trees. Clove was first introduced to Madagascar in the early 1900’s, and it has thrived on the island country in the Indian Ocean. Madagascar’s eastern coast also has many hills, which helps protect clove plantations from cyclones.
Unlike clove trees grown in surrounding countries, the clove trees of Madagascar are grown under semi-wild conditions and only require occasional weeding and maintenance. Most clove trees are in small patches of ten to fifty trees and frequently grow alongside coffee trees. It takes approximately three years for a clove tree to mature for harvesting.
Our Clove oil is produced from clove buds typically collected by small farmers. Harvesting, which is done by hand, is performed by both men and women. The oil we target comes from the clove buds, which are ready for harvest when they turn bright red, just before they blossom. Harvesting occurs during the fall of the year. After harvesting, the clove buds are left to dry in the sunshine, which helps produce higher quality oil and yields, thus more value for the small farmers. After drying, the clove buds are taken to the coastal town of Mananjary for distillation.
