We are experiencing a student loan crisis in the United States. Over 40 million Americans have an average student loan debt of $30,000. Due to unemployment or income below the poverty line, 28% of borrowers are unable to make payments on their student loans. It’s important to be aware of all the effects, advantages and disadvantages of taking out a student loan.

It is important to consider the pros and cons involved in taking out student loans.

Preparing to pay back your student loans
You can prepare to pay back your student loans starting as a college student. It’s important to consider that your job after college will need to provide you with enough income to pay back your student loans.

Here are some recommendations on how you can prepare while in college:
*Find a part time job while you’re in school. This way, you’ll be able to set aside some money for the repayment of your student loans.
*Try cooking at home
*Look for affordable housing
*Buy or rent your textbooks online

Remember, your student loans can only be used to pay for the following:
*Tuition
*Fees
*Room and board
*Textbooks
They cannot be used to pay off credit card debt.

Important questions to ask yourself when taking out student loans:
*How much am I borrowing?
*What is the interest rate?
*When do I need to pay it back?
*Are there any safeguards or deferment periods?
*Can I ask for lower interest rates at a later time?
*Can I consolidate my loans?

Words of wisdom
*Stay up to date
*Make sure you are current with your loan or in a deferment or forbearance program
*If you fall behind, to not remain silent or do nothing
*Call your servicer and ask for help
