BEST TRAVEL CREDIT CARDS IN CANADA 2022 | Aeroplan Credit Card Travel Rewards Explained

Traveling is one of the most exciting and rewarding experiences a person can have. But if you’re not careful, it can also be expensive. That’s why it pays to have the right credit card when you’re traveling. The best credit cards for travel rewards offer generous rewards, perks, and bonuses that can help you save money and maximize your travel experience.

When choosing the best credit card for travel rewards, it’s important to consider your individual needs and preferences. Do you prefer a card with a flat rewards rate? Or do you prefer one that offers bonus rewards on certain categories, such as hotels, flights, and dining out? Are you looking for a card with no annual fee? Or do you want a card with a sign-up bonus? Once you’ve determined your needs, you can begin to compare cards and look for the best one for you.

One of the most popular travel rewards credit cards is the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card. This card offers an impressive 2x points on travel and dining purchases, plus 1x points on all other purchases. The points can be redeemed for travel through Chase Ultimate Rewards, which offers discounts on hotels, flights, car rentals, and more. The card also has a generous sign-up bonus of 60,000 points if you spend $4,000 within the first three months. The annual fee is $95, but it is waived for the first year.

Another great travel rewards credit card is the Barclaycard Arrival Plus™ World Elite Mastercard®. This card offers a flat 2X miles on every purchase, with no limit on how many miles you can earn. The miles can be redeemed for statement credits on travel purchases, and you can earn an additional 5% miles bonus when you redeem your miles. The card also has a generous sign-up bonus of 40,000 miles if you spend $3,000 within the first 90 days. The annual fee is $89, but it is waived for the first year.

If you’re looking for a credit card with no annual fee, the Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card is a great option. This card offers 1.25 miles per dollar spent on all purchases, and the miles can be redeemed for statement credits on travel purchases. You can also transfer your miles to any of the 14 airline partners and get a 25% miles bonus. The card also has a sign-up bonus of 20,000 miles if you spend $1,000 within the first three months.

The Citi Premier℠ Card is another great choice for travelers. This card offers 3X points on travel, including gas stations, airfare, hotels, and car rentals. The points can be redeemed for travel through the Citi ThankYou® Rewards program, which offers discounts on hotels, flights, and more. The card also has a generous sign-up bonus of 60,000 points if you spend $4,000 within the first three months. The annual fee is $95, but it is waived for the first year.

No matter which credit card you choose, it’s important to remember that travel rewards cards are only beneficial if you pay off your balance each month. Paying interest on a travel rewards card will negate any rewards you may have earned, so it’s important to only use a travel rewards card if you can pay off the balance each month.

Aeroplan is a frequent flyer loyalty program initiated by Air Canada, and is partnered with numerous banks and financial institutions such as TD, CIBC, and American Express. Aeroplan is by far the best program for earning free flights and travel perks from credit card points, as it provides the highest value and return on investment when compared to other travel credit card programs in Canada. In this video, we look at the various Aeroplan credit cards that are offered today in Canada, and I will help you discover which best fits your needs and spending habits.

Before we get into the best credit cards that are partnered with Aeroplan, it is first important to say that you must always pay off your credit cards on time, and in full. If you don’t always consistently do this, then there is no point in earning travel rewards, as the credit card interest payments would far outweigh the returns you get.

The first card that we cover is the American Express Aeroplan Reserve Card. This card comes with an incredible sign up bonus of 30,000 Aeroplan points for making your first purchase with the card, and an additional bonus of 5,000 points per month for the first 12 months, as long as you spend at least $1,000 each of those months with the card. Each Aeroplan point is approximately worth $0.02, so with this card, you essentially receive $450 worth of travel expenses as a sign up bonus through these points. In addition to this, you will also receive 3 points for every dollar spent with Air Canada, 2 point for every dollar spent on food, and 1.25 point for every dollar spent on everything else.

In addition to this, you will also receive incredible travel perks, such as cheaper flight seat upgrades, cheaper hotel room upgrades, travel medical insurance, lost baggage insurance, flight delay insurance, access to every Maple Leaf airport lounge, as well as access to thousands of other VIP airport lounges across the world for a maximum of 6 visits per year. You will also receive other perks such as purchase return protection, and extended warranty on purchases for a maximum of 2 years.

This card comes with an annual fee of $599, which may be a bit much for most users. American Express also offers a more affordable option with the American Express Aeroplan Card, which has an annual fee of $120, slightly lower signup bonuses, slightly lower points per dollar spent, and doesn’t include the access to the VIP airport lounges.

The next card we take a look at is the TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Privilege Credit Card. This card has a great sign up bonus of 20,000 Aeroplan points for making your first purchase, 45,000 points for spending at least $1,000 in the first 90 days, and a free second airline ticket when you purchase a ticket with Air Canada to anywhere in North America.

As well as this, you receive 2 points for every dollar spent with Air Canada, 1.5 points for every dollar sent on gas, groceries, or food, and 1 point per dollar spent on anything else. You will also receive all the amazing perks that the American Express Aeroplan Reserve Card offered.

Next is the only no fee Aeroplan credit card available in Canada, and that is the CIBC Aeroplan Visa Card. This card comes with a sign up bonus of 10,000 Aeroplan points for making your first purchase, which is a decent sign up bonus considering that you will never pay any fees for this card if you always pay off your balance on time. In addition, you will receive 1 point for every dollar spent on gas, groceries, and with Air Canada, and you will receive a point for every $1.50 spent on all else.

If you don’t travel too frequently and you feel that the $599 fee will not be justifiable given your traveling and spending habits, then I would recommend getting the CIBC Aeroplan Visa Card. If however you travel frequently, and you feel that the $599 fee will be worth the amazing perks, such as the VIP airport lounges and the travel coverages, then I would recommend going for either the TD or the American Express cards, depending on which sign up bonus matches your current spending habits.
